The Distress (Cloudy) article was inspired by leather garments from the 1970s that had naturally faded and discolored over time.

At Noir Larmes, we collaborated with the Italian tannery DEGI PELLAMI to achieve the distress effect through vegetable tanning using eco-friendly materials. Unlike ordinary distressed leather tanned with chrome (chemical dyes), the Italy Vegetable-Tanned Crack Distressed Leather (Full Grain) offers superior quality with a more natural and profound vintage effect.

To achieve this effect, the base color is first applied either from the natural crust shade or through ground dyeing. The leather is then drum-dyed to the desired shade, followed by the even spraying of a light coat of dye across the surface, creating a thin overlay.

Since extended milling can cause the applied dye to fade, skilled artisans must carefully check the distress effect every 5 to 10 minutes and fine-tune the process with precision. This requires great concentration and dedication, making it a particularly demanding procedure.

Once the overall tone reaches the intended effect, the process is completed by fixing the final color. As hundreds of hides tumble and collide with each other during milling, the distressed effect cannot appear uniformly on every hide. This very irregularity is what gives each piece its own unique vintage character, a hallmark of the CRACK DISTRESSED article.

Made from full grain vegetable-tanned Métis leather, this piece offers the durability and rich touch of a sturdy ALTO-type leather with a substantial thickness and supple hand feel.
